RWANDA OR UGANDA / A GORILLA SAFARI COMPARISON

Three forests.
Find your way in.

Volcanoes, Mgahinga and Bwindi all offer mountain gorilla trekking. The more useful question is which one fits your time, your route and the journey you want around the encounter.

On a small screen, swipe across the table to compare all three parks.

Standard encounterAges 15+; up to eight visitors in a ranger-led group; up to one hour with the gorillas. Walking duration varies.

Permit prices are per person, per trek, not complete safari prices. Other categories and seasonal conditions may apply. The park controls group allocation and access; private transfers do not include exclusive trekking.

01 / VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Keep the journey in Rwanda.

Choose Volcanoes when you want the gorilla trek to sit naturally within a Rwanda itinerary. Arrive through Kigali, settle in the highlands and give the encounter its own day. If you have longer, add Lake Kivu, Nyungwe or Akagera deliberately, with proper travel time between them.

Our starting point is two nights near the park for a focused trek stay, with an extra Kigali night when flight timing calls for it. A longer stay creates room for golden monkeys, conservation learning or a quiet day at the lodge. It does not change the standard gorilla viewing allowance.

02 / MGAHINGA GORILLA NATIONAL PARK

Follow the Virunga landscape.

Mgahinga lies in Uganda’s Kisoro district, within the same wider volcanic landscape as Rwanda’s northern highlands. It has its own permits, briefing arrangements and accommodation decisions. A Rwanda permit cannot be transferred to a Ugandan park.

We consider Mgahinga for travellers who want to experience both sides of this landscape and can allow the nights and border logistics. Our seven-day Virunga Connection proposes Volcanoes and Mgahinga, with time to cross and return to Kigali. It does not include Bwindi.

The lower standard foreign non-resident permit price is one part of the budget. Compare the complete journey, including accommodation and transfers, before deciding on cost alone.

OUR PLANNING PRIORITY

Protect the transfer day.

Check permit availability before building the route around a lodge. Allow for the border, current road conditions and a calm arrival before the trekking morning. We reconfirm entry eligibility and crossing arrangements for each itinerary.

03 / BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

Choose the sector, then the stay.

Bwindi offers a different forest setting, with steep ridges and valleys and four main trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. The sector is a practical booking decision, not just a name on the permit.

For a journey from Kigali, we select the sector and accommodation together, then plan the transfer and border crossing around them. A lodge advertised as “in Bwindi” is not automatically a workable base for every briefing point. Southern access via Kisoro and northern access via Kihihi lead to different routes.

Choose Bwindi when that forest and a considered Uganda stay appeal to you, rather than adding it as a rushed detour. If you want to combine all three parks, we will design a longer journey with separate permit and overnight arrangements.

BEFORE CONFIRMATION

Four points to match.

  1. The trekking date and permit sector.
  2. Your named lodge and room category.
  3. The correct briefing point and morning transfer.
  4. Your onward route and flight timing.

THE DECISION, MADE PERSONAL

Start with what matters to you.

If your time is short and your focus is Rwanda, begin with Volcanoes. If you want a Virunga journey across the border, consider Mgahinga. If Bwindi’s forest draws you, give its sector and stay the time they need. None promises an easier walk, a particular gorilla family or guaranteed sightings.

Tell us your dates, available nights and preferred pace. We will compare feasible permits and complete itinerary options, with inclusions and conditions set out in writing.
